Bishop Statement on Dispute Between News Corp and Cablevision

Statement

Date: Oct. 14, 2010

Congressman Tim Bishop released the following statement regarding the retransmission consent dispute between News Corp and Cablevision:

"I strongly encourage both News Corp and Cablevision to submit to binding arbitration before a neutral third party in the absence of an agreement on the retransmission consent negotiations for the renewal of WNYW (Channel 5), WWOR (Channel 9), and WTXF (Channel 29) by the Friday, October 15 deadline.

If News Corp and Cablevision fail to reach agreement, millions of cable television consumers stand to lose broadcast programming on News Corp channels, including baseball's National League Championship Series, a New York Giants NFL game, and the World Series.

Retransmission consent disputes continue to threaten cable television consumers' access to broadcast television. Consumers should not be held hostage every time there is a retransmission consent negotiation between two media companies."
